Notes
Polonius wants to be a part of the royal family. He is in a high position but it is not enough. So he makes up a reason for Hamlet acting crazy. He says Hamlet went mad because Ophelia rejected him. Theme of prostitution, he wants to sell or trade his daughter for a higher rank in life. Two of Hamlets old friends, who don't seem to be as close to him anymore, are convinced by the king to spy on Hamlet. That would be the motif of spying. Hamlet talks about the sun breeding maggots. He is the sun, and while he may bring good to the garden of Denmark, certain things he should just stay away from. Polonius asks roundabout questions to spy. Again the motif of spying. He plans to have Ophelia talk to Hamlet and hide to listen to what they talk about. Motif of spying. Hamlet says if Polonius is being honest then he is one of very few men. Theme of corruption. Hamlet also talks about his bad dreams. He has been dreaming about the ghost. He might not be so sure that the ghost was really his father.

1.3 & 1.4
1. Ophelia is told not to get with Hamlet. Laertes says that Hamlet is not allowed to marry who he wants, so even if he does love Ophelia, things won't work out.
2. Ophelia is compared to a flower because she can be ruined just as easily as one. In the large garden of Denmark, she is a beautiful thing that sticks out just like a flower, but because of this is a target for things that would destroy her, like a worm a.k.a Hamlet. Should she get involved with him, her life will be destroyed.
3. Ophelia tells Laertes that because he is her brother she'll take what he says to heart, but she knows what he does in France so she tells him don't be such a hypocrite. Although because he is a man, it's ok for him to run around with lots of women, it wont ruin him. Ophelia however must be pure if she wants to marry.
4. Polonious says to be proper and not vulgar. To listen to those who have something to say, and don't talk too much. (maybe saying Laertes needs to learn when to shut up because he's a little hot tempered... possible foreshadow). Find true friends and dont borrow or spend too much money.
5. Polonius says Ophelia is like a little child for believing that Hamlet would ever love her. He says Hamlet is only concerned about himself.

8. Hamlet says that because of their traditions, other countries look at them as partiers and drunks. That even when they achieve something great, it is downplayed by that perception of them, Denmark.
9. Horatio thinks that the ghost may be a demon sent to tempt Hamlet and possibly trick him into suicide.
10. Hamlet tells them to back off and stay put while he follows the ghost.

Hamlet questions
1.) Hamlet is dressed in black as a marriage announcement and he seems sad when it is supposed to be a happy day.
2.) Because the king has just died and back than it was against the law to marry your sister in law like the king did.
3.) He wants to return and serve in France
4.) Hamlet is now Claudius’s son and nephew but hamlet does not like his uncle/father at all
5.) He is the son of the old king who had been compared to be the sun of the land
6.) His mom married so quickly after the death of her Husband
7.) The way he dresses on the outside shows how he feels on the inside
8.) The wedding and funeral were so close together that you could use the food from the funeral at the wedding
